Bengal:The Mughal emperor Farrukh Siyar ( reigned 1713-1719 ) appointed Murshid Quil Khan as the deputy to the governor in 1717.

  • However, taking advantage of the political instability at the Mughal court, Murshid Quli Khan gathered all the powers of the governor in his own hands and began ruling Bengal as an independent state.
  • Murshid Quli Khan successors took a number of step to make the administration of Bengal more efficient.
  • For instance corrupt and inefficient officials were removed from their posts, the assessment and collection of revenue were done very strictly,the growth of agriculture and trade was encouraged so as to increase revenue and the entire administrative system was re-organised to ensure lesser Mughal influence.
  • They improved the administration and encouraged agriculture, industry and trade.A strict control was maintained over the collection of taxes.
  • Soon, Bengal became the one of the most prosperous regions of India.This attracted the English to the region.
  • The Historic Battle of Plassey in 1757 and the Battle of Buxar in 1764 firmly established their power in this region.
